A trip to the Hulda Klager Lilac Gardens

The end of April I took a trip with my friends church group of ladies up to the Hulda Klager Lilac Gardens in Woodland, WA. We apparently went too late this year. With bursts of warm 80 degree weather off and on this spring, the lilacs bloomed early and were mostly dead by the time we got there. In fact, one of the ladies commented, after we got out to the back yard behind the house, ‘Where are all the lilacs?’ Yes. Where indeed? They were mostly dead and brown and dying. But, if you looked closely, you could find a few nice ones here and there. With bits of brown thrown in for good measure, because they, too, were dying. So sad…

There were all sorts of other lovely flowers, and overall it was a beautiful day in the Pacific Northwest and a wonderful day spent with my friend. Plus, new friendships were made with the ladies we spent the day with. Next year, I would suggest going sooner in the season. Although I have gone on Mother’s Day weekend before and still seen blooms, so perhaps checking to see if the lilacs are still blooming before going would be a better idea.
