How to mix plaid like a pro

Are you a fan of plaid? Here are some tips for mixing plaid patterns like a pro!

Mix similar colors. Here I mixed purple plaid and pink plaid. Colors that compliment each other.

Go bold! I also chose bold bright colors for a brilliant color scheme that stands out.

Layer. Take an accessory like a scarf or poncho and layer it over another plaid.

Gingham and plaid. Mix gingham and plaid. A simple gingham check with a more complex plaid pattern is a great way to layer squares upon squares.

Sport a plaid coat. Wear a plaid coat over plaid pants, a dress or a top.

Opposites. Wear opposite color patterns, For example, if your outer layer is red with black, make the inner layer black with red.

Coordinate color schemes. Match a coat and hat in the same pattern of plaid for a matchy, matchy plaid look.

Mix different types of plaid. Try mixing a plaid with a smaller lines with a bigger plaid pattern. Complimenting your color scheme.

Tie in with a neutral shade. Make sure to use different types of plaid tied in with a good neutral shade as a baseline so the eyes don’t go totally crazy.

Keep it simple and have fun with it.

Shopping day – and what I kept and why

Yesterday was my son’s birthday and we took him out shopping for some clothes and then went to the Candy Basket Factory Outlet in Portland, Oregon. While he was shopping, I was trying on various outfits at Marshall’s. You’ll have to excuse the crappy cell phone pics. It’s what I had with me. And I’m not sure why I did the same pose in every single picture. Let’s just call it my fitting room pose. Ha. I ended up leaving with only one item. Can you guess which one?

Here’s what I found:

Burgundy Floral Jumpsuit

Blue and white kimono style dress

Loved the burgundy jumpsuit on me, but it had a bit of a stain on the bodice. And the material felt like silk, so I wasn’t sure if I’d be able to get it out without taking it to the dry cleaners. What I did like was the built in bra. Nice touch for petite women like me, and with the spaghetti straps, you wouldn’t have to find a strapless bra as it’s built in. Still really like this item. Maybe another Marshall’s will have an unstained one in extra small.

The black one was a size small and fit okay, but I Iiked the fit of the extra small burgundy one with the stain better, and they didn’t have more in that color in my size. Plus, once I saw the stain, I was wondering how easy to clean this item would be. So, neither of those came home with me.

Then there was the blue and white kimono type dress. It didn’t look real flattering on, if you asked me. So a no go for that one.

I loved the gingham swimsuit, though. Still loving the gingham trend, and those little loop-de-loops in the front were a nice touch. The suit is by Jessica Simpson. So adorbs! I’d say it came home with me, but my mom was shopping with me that day and bought it so she can give it to me for my birthday in August. I’ll look surprised. August is a month and a half away, though. Wah. But if I wait until August to get a new bathing suit, there won’t be much to choose from. …Still, I want it now. Le sigh.

What trends are you loving this summer?
